Winemaker, Terry Luce, started making wine in the late 1970’s as Christmas presents for family and friends. After retiring from the Seattle Fire Department, he moved his family to Southern Oregon to escape the climate of the Seattle area. He found the climate near Myrtle Point, Oregon wonderful for growing coastal varietal grapes. The family vineyard, a research vineyard with 19 varieties of wine grapes, established what wine grapes could grow and mature in Coos County. Finding that varietal grapes from Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon could mature enough for wine, estate wines are now being offered.
Since Blackberries and Cranberries are plentiful, those fruits were drafted to make fine fruit wines focusing on the fruit not the sugar.
The winery itself is perched atop a hillside overlooking the Coquille River valley. The deck offers a 180 degree view. The tasting room on the deck offers free tasting and wine by the glass, bottle or case. Wine parings with food are offered for groups.
Each September a Harvest Dinner is offered al fresco on the deck. A four course dinner is offered with wine parings. The number is limited to 30 people and everyone is seated “family” style on a single long table. Candles and stars set the mood as the wine and food make strangers friends by the second course.
